Calm the Mind.... Purpose of Meditation

What is Meditation

You’ve probably heard all of the buzz about meditation and you may be wondering if it’s for you? Or, maybe you really don’t understand exactly what meditation is or how it works? These are both questions I had 5 years ago when I got started.

To put it simply, meditation is calming the mind and learning to be present. The goal is to allow the mind to rest from thoughts rather than trying to tend to each one as it enters the mind. Sometimes you are focusing on an object, sound or activity. The good news is that there really is no right or wrong way to meditate and there are many forms available.

One of simplest forms of meditation is breathing. Focusing on your breath, following your inhale and exhale is meditating! This is an easy form that can be done anytime or anywhere. Even 5 minutes can be beneficial!

One of the first forms that I tried was guided meditation. My mind is constantly racing and I knew I would need help controlling it. I set aside 15 minutes every day for 21 days and listened to an audio online series on guided meditation. It was difficult at first but then quickly became something that I looked foreword to. After just a few days I felt much more calm and present!

Meditation has been proven to have physical, mental and emotional health benefits! Just 5- 20 minutes a day can make a huge difference! I love this quote and think it sums up meditation well….“The goal of meditation isn’t to control your thoughts, it’s to stop letting them control you. Don’t hesitate to give it a try!
