What is Yoga anyway?

What is Yoga anyway?

Before anyone tries yoga they usually have this thought of what they think yoga is. I know for me I pictured beautiful fit girls doing headstands! You too? That’s common in our western version. Although that is one type of yoga, it is definitely not all of it! So lets jump to the definition. My online dictionary says “a Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline, a part of which includes breath control, simple meditation and the adoption of specific bodily postures, is widely practiced for health and relaxation of physical poses.”

Okay so good news- you don’t have to be able to do a headstand to practice yoga! You also don’t have to be fit, young, female or flexible. Yoga really is for everyone and there are so many health benefits from stress relief to balance that often get overlooked. There really is a type of yoga for anyone willing to try it. From mediation and restorative to flow and power you should be able to find something that you like and is beneficial to your overall mind and body. That’s what I love about yoga! Many of us come to yoga for the physical practice but it’s often the mental aspect that really surprises first time yoga practitioners. I know it did me! Yoga provides connection, balance, strength and so much more! If you are new to yoga I encourage you to try several different types of yoga until you find what works.
